THE 4 SISTERS
Those are the 4 high passes clustered around the distant town of Andermatt, perched on the main railway line from Zurich to Milan. Their names sound grim enough, like in Grimsel, Susten, Furka and Oberalp, to which may be added the now tamed St. Gotthard. The first three, together with a stretch of highway leading to the St. Gotthard, form one of the most formidable highway systems in Switzerland, possibly in the entire Alpine cordillera, on the map a rectangular composition, some 120 kms. long, of steep and narrow roads over the most difficult and treacherous, but stunningly beautiful Swiss passes.

Of the 4, Furka is the highest, topping out at 2,431 metres (8023 feet) and probably the most winding. Susten, with its frequent, awesome fogs, perhaps the most challenging. In wintertime, swiss passes are mostly closed, except for those which, in recent years, have been shortened and bypassed by tunnels near the top, but even the latter can be daunting. Oberap is actually the gateway to the other three, coming from the east and the Chalet. The reward for all of these passes are the absolutely unforgettable vistas, the pure and brisk air, the clarity foreshortening the distance to opposing peaks, the dazzling light and the astonishing purity of sound. In late spring, early summer, the fragrance of mountain flowers to the sensory delight.
Don't be put off by the challenge of the journey. Millions do the route every year in complete safety but the wise not only take their time but start early so as to avoid the late afternoon fogs. Keep a watchful eye on children since many of the turn-outs, where you might wish to stop for a photograph, have no or little guardrails. Remember that heavy vehicles (buses etc.) have the priority, even if it means your giving them, in opposing traffic, the safer side of the road. Be sure your vehicle is in good condition, carries plenty of fuel. Use sunblock to guard against harmful rays at those altitudes and take some sandwiches and liquids along with you as roadside restaurants are few and far between. Above all, take your time and use good judgment. When you're back in the coziness of Chalet Nov'Arcadia, you'll have something to write home about.
